why “beet”? beet gallery was named by the gallery’s original owner, artist lisa kaser. lisa named it after a motif that runs through jitterbug perfume, a novel by tom robbins. the introduction to the book begins:

"the beet is the most intense of vegetables…”
(tom encourages you to purchase a copy of his book and read it in its entirety so you may fully appreciate the possibilities created by using a vegetable as a literary device.)
what is “contemporary craft”? my definition of craft is art based on the traditions once used to fabricate functional items for everyday use. these traditional media (clay, glass, fiber, wood, metal) and traditional techniques (throwing, casting, weaving, carving, forging) have been used for millennia to make vessels and baskets, clothing, household goods, furniture, shelter, and tools.
in contemporary craft, these traditions plus modern materials, techniques, and tools (plastics, polymers, light-emitting diodes, sewing machines, power tools, computer-generated anything) may be employed to make functional objects and non-functional art pieces. beet gallery’s focus is non-functional craft, but i sometimes offer two-dimensional work and functional craft.
who’s the pup?

that’s maisy, the official gallery dog. but since she would rather be home lying about on the sofa, the job is filled by a variety of “temp” dogs: primarily hercules, but also moscow, sparky, chester, zoey and iggy, lily, thor, the other zoey, and winston. for visiting canines, dog treats are in the bottom drawer of the file cabinet, and fresh water is always available in one of phebe miller’s lovely little ceramic bowls.
